The Nigerian embassy in
Abidjan, Cote d’ Voire has rescued four Nigerian girl after they were
trafficked to that country for prostitution. The girls, who include 3 Deltans
and 1 Akwa Ibomite were rescued on Tuesday 26 April, 2016 and their names were
given as Igho Rachael (24), Ukom Emem (24), Emeka Chinagorom (23), and
Avwerosuoghene Eloho (22).
According to our source who craved anonymity, the girls
were tricked by their abductors to the French speaking West African country by
their abductors on the pretext that they would be offered lucrative jobs there.
The girls escaped to the Nigerian Embassy when they
realized that they were being tricked into prostitution. The Nigerian embassy officials in Cote d’
Ivoire promptly repatriated the girls to the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS)
at Idiroko border where the Officer-In-Charge of the Command, DCI Mambut
promptly handed them over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic
in Persons (NAPTIP) officials on the morning of 28 April, 2016 at the
instruction of the Ogun State Command of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Comptroller
(Mrs) Victoria Isang who said that “the
rate at which this trafficking on these young girls are going on if unchecked
will continue to place the nation in bad picture on the issues of child’s
right”
ADVOCACY
Efforts
to reach the NAPTIP officials as at time of going to press are in
progress. Also, it would be ascertained
if the culprits were apprehended and brought to justice.
The
efforts of the Nigerian Embassy in Cote D’ Ivories and the Nigerian Immigration
Service at Idiroko Border led by DC
Mambut is worthy of commendation as the Nigerian government has been taking
extra measures to curb the excesses of child traffickers in the country and
beyond.
It
would be recalled that child trafficking has been on the rise in recent
times. The aim of the illicit traders is
to engage the girls in prostitution in order to make money out of them.
