One great assignment which the new Customs Area Controller of Seme Border Command, Comptroller Timi Bomodi has vowed to achieve is to bring to an order the proliferation of security checkpoints at Seme road. It could be noted that this issue has remained a sing sung over the time by previous administrations. The former National Public Relations Officer of Nigeria Customs Service whose on his promotion was redeployed to Kirikiri Lighter Terminal KLT before coming over to Seme border sees the continued problem of disappearing and reappearing of most of these checkpoints as lack of executive fiat. You cannot imagine that fifty-two checkpoints comprising Police, Customs, Immigration, Civil Defence, NDLEA, Plant Quarantine and others are found along the Seme expressway. By law some these checkpoints are authorized to exist here to maintain peace and order on this gateway from the
ECOWAS corridor to Lagos state Nigeria. The problem is not their presence but their numbers on the road, where at every 50 meters there is a checkpoint. In most cases a checkpoint belonging to a particular security operative, to be precise, the Enhanced Border Patrol mobile police would be overlooking each other.This is making movement along this route very herculean. The question therefore is why are all these war-like checkpoints along this route? It is on this note that the Customs Area Controller of Seme border as the chairman of the joint security operative at the border decided to start with his constituency, the Nigeria Customs Service.Commuters and other users of the road can attest to the reduction of these
Customs checkpoints hoping that the leaders of other security operatives on the road should do same as soon as possible.It is absolutely not acceptable for Immigration Service to be on the road while travelers definitely have a final point where their travelling documents are processed at the exit point at the border.What are police checking on the road when in all these years they have never made any seizure on arms and ammunitions which they claim to be their area of purview? They have not also made any other seizures and brought to the Customs which has the greater statutory right to operate on the road.It is therefore expected that the heads of these other security operatives with much emphasis to the Nigeria police to do the needful as soon as possible to cancel the toga already labelled against Seme border route even by CNN.On another development, there are visible signs of the presence of the new Customs Area Controller at the border around the ECOWAS Joint Border Post at Seme border. The vast and beautiful Joint Border complex has remained with little or no directional signs for movements. This has been creating violations on movements in and around the complex. On arrival, Comptroller Bomodi, a public relations guru noticed this and decided to make amends. Today, there are directional sign boards placed at strategic position to assist users of the complex.The Enforcement and Operations office section at the border is also wearing a new look with beautiful renovations, announcing the presence of a man who is environmentally friendly.
